A Supermoon occurs when the Full Moon lunar phase happens during the Moon’s perigee – the point in its orbit where it is closest to the earth. The Full Moon therefore appears around 10% larger to us here on earth, giving rise to the name Supermoon.
Supermoons are not all that rare – there are typically three or four every year.
What makes this Supermoon different is that it is also a Blue Moon.
A Blue Moon occurs when there are two Full Moons in a single calendar month – as this month, when we had a Full Moon on August 1st and we will have another on August 31st; the second is known as the Blue Moon. It doesn’t look blue visually; the name comes from roots meaning an unusual or unlikely occurrence.
Blue Moons are relatively uncommon – one Full Moon in every 33 is likely to be the second in a calendar month, therefore a Blue Moon.
It is rare for a Supermoon and a Blue Moon to occur at the same time – this only happens once every 10-20 years. The last Blue Supermoon was in December 2009 and the next won’t be until 2037.
So with this Blue Supermoon we have the chance to glimpse a rare astrological occurence indeed.
