‘Empress Ri’ Rules the Met Ball With Chinese Pancake Dress (Funny Photos)
The 2015 Met Ball made its grand opening in New York City on May 4. The theme for this year’s gala was “China: Through the Looking Glass” (中国：镜花水月), which set the tone for the dresses of the red carpet guests.
Celebrities like Rihanna, Kim Kardashian, and Anne Hathaway showed up on the opening night wearing stunning dresses with Chinese elements. Chinese actresses such as Gongli, Fan Bingbing, and Zhang Ziyi also attended the red carpet walk in gorgeous dresses.
Rihanna’s fancy imperial yellow dress was surely the focal point on the red carpet. It was designed by Guo Pei from Beijing, and handmade by a Chinese dressmaker, complete with fur-trimmed cape, which took her two years to finish.
Bloggers in China had fun with the photos, and created various memes (translated below) while sharing them on Weibo.

The majestic look of the dress invited plenty of creative ideas from Chinese Internet users. Many Weibo users noticed its resemblance to Jianbing (Chinese egg pancakes). One commented:
