Posted May 13, 2025 | End Times Watch

As end-times watchers, our primary focus this week is on President Trump, as he is in the Middle East meeting with various leaders. Peace talks are what we specifically tuned into. So, what has happened as of May 13, 2025. Let’s take a look.

During his May 2025 Middle East tour, President Donald Trump has announced several significant initiatives aimed at reshaping U.S. relations in the region.Major Economic and Defense Agreements

  • Historic Arms Deal: Trump signed a $142 billion arms agreement with Saudi Arabia, marking the largest defense sales deal in U.S. history. This includes upgrades to Saudi air, missile, and maritime defense systems.
  • Investment Commitments: Saudi Arabia pledged $600 billion in investments across U.S. sectors such as artificial intelligence, energy, and infrastructure. Notable projects include a $20 billion investment by Saudi-based DataVolt in U.S. AI data centers and infrastructure.
  • Tech Collaborations: U.S. companies like Nvidia and AMD are partnering with Saudi AI startup Humain, supplying advanced semiconductors to bolster AI development in the kingdom.

Diplomatic Initiatives and Regional Engagements

  • Syria Relations: Trump announced the lifting of all U.S. sanctions on Syria, signaling a potential normalization of relations with the new Syrian government led by President Ahmad al-Sharaa. A meeting between Trump and Sharaa is scheduled in Riyadh, marking the first encounter between U.S. and Syrian leaders in over two decades.
  • Iran Policy: The administration reinstated the “maximum pressure” campaign against Iran, aiming to compel Tehran to negotiate a new nuclear agreement. Trump emphasized a preference for diplomacy but warned of possible military action if negotiations fail.
  • Houthi Ceasefire: A ceasefire between the U.S. and Yemen’s Houthi rebels was brokered, ending recent hostilities. The Houthis agreed to halt attacks on vessels in the Red Sea, though the ceasefire does not apply to Israel.

Controversies and Ethical Concerns

  • Personal Business Interests: Reports have surfaced about Trump’s family engaging in business deals in the Middle East, including Trump-branded residential towers in Dubai and Jeddah, and a golf resort in Qatar. Additionally, Trump reportedly accepted a Boeing 747-8KB from Qatar, raising ethical questions.
  • Gaza Plan Opposition: Trump’s proposal to relocate Palestinians from Gaza has faced opposition from Arab leaders, who view the plan as destabilizing to regional security. Egypt and Jordan, in particular, have expressed concerns, while Israel’s prime minister has supported the idea.

Broader Strategic Vision

President Trump’s approach emphasizes economic collaboration and regional stabilization over military intervention. By fostering significant investment deals and engaging in diplomatic initiatives, the administration aims to realign U.S. foreign policy in the Middle East towards pragmatic partnerships and economic growth.

A ceasefire between the U.S. and Yemen’s Houthi rebels was brokered certainly is a step towards peace. But what about the Abram Accords? Has there been any new developments relating to this?

President Trump’s recent Middle East visit has prominently featured efforts to expand the Abraham Accords, the normalization agreements between Israel and several Arab nations initiated during his first term.

Push for Saudi Arabia to Join the Abraham Accords

In Riyadh, President Trump publicly urged Saudi Arabia to formally recognize Israel by joining the Abraham Accords. He emphasized that such a move would be a “great honor” and beneficial for regional stability. This appeal was made during a speech at the Saudi-U.S. investment forum, attended by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and tech entrepreneur Elon Musk.

However, Saudi Arabia has been hesitant to normalize relations with Israel amid ongoing conflicts, particularly the war in Gaza, which has resulted in significant casualties and displacement. The Saudi leadership has indicated that normalization is unlikely without a ceasefire and a clear roadmap toward Palestinian statehood.

Potential Inclusion of Syria and Lebanon

The Trump administration is also exploring the possibility of bringing Syria and Lebanon into the Abraham Accords. U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff stated that the continued governance of Gaza by Hamas is a “red line” and that any long-term resolution must exclude the group from power. He also suggested that Syria and Lebanon could be candidates for normalization with Israel, contingent on regional developments.

Establishment of an Abraham Accords Ambassador

To institutionalize and expand the Abraham Accords, there have been calls within the U.S. government to appoint a dedicated ambassador. A bipartisan bill passed in 2023 established this position, but it remained unfilled during the Biden administration. House Republicans have urged President Trump to prioritize this appointment to ensure cohesive and effective efforts in expanding the accords.

Challenges and Criticisms

While the expansion of the Abraham Accords is a key objective, it faces several challenges. Critics argue that the accords have largely sidelined the Palestinian issue, focusing instead on economic and strategic interests. This approach has led to skepticism among some Arab nations and populations, who view normalization without addressing Palestinian rights as inadequate.

In summary, President Trump’s Middle East visit underscores a renewed push to expand the Abraham Accords, with a focus on including Saudi Arabia and potentially Syria and Lebanon. However, these efforts are complicated by ongoing regional conflicts and differing priorities among Middle Eastern nations.

Upcoming meetings yet to come.

President Ahmed al-Sharaa (Syria): A meeting is scheduled with Syria’s new president, Ahmed al-Sharaa, marking a significant diplomatic development amid ongoing efforts to address the conflict and political transition in Syria on May 14.

Emir Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani (Qatar): President Trump is set to meet with the Emir of Qatar in Doha on May 15.

President Mohammed bin Zayed (United Arab Emirates): A meeting is scheduled with the UAE President in Abu Dhabi on May 16.

I will keep you up to date regarding the results of these meetings in relation to peace talks.
