Trump said the U.S. mediated overnight talks between the two nuclear-armed nations after violence spiraled early on Saturday in an exchange of cross-border strikes.
President Donald Trump announced today that Pakistan and India had agreed to a full and immediate ceasefire, following talks mediated by the United States.
Pakistan fired missiles at Indian military sites early this morning, hours after accusing India of attacking its airbases. Both sides have blamed the other of attacking first.
The crossborder exchange was the sharpest escalation between the nuclear-armed nations since a military confrontation began on Wednesday. Both sides have said they are willing to de-escalate, if the other did so as well.
Several people have been killed and dozens injured in Pakistan, according to local officials, with early reports of casualties in India as well.
The cycle of strikes and counter-strikes was sparked by a terrorist attack last month in India-administered Kashmir. India and Pakistan both claim Kashmir in its entirety. India blamed Pakistan for the attack, which Pakistan denies.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio says India and Pakistan have agreed to an immediate ceasefire and to start talks on “a broad set of issues at a neutral site.”
In a post on X, he commended the nations’ two prime ministers on “their wisdom, prudence, and statesmanship in choosing the path of peace.”
Rubio said that he and Vice President JD Vance had spent 48 hours with “senior Indian and Pakistani officials,” including Prime Ministers Narendra Modi and Shehbaz Sharif, ahead of the ceasefire.

“Pakistan has always strived for peace and security in the region, without compromising on its sovereignty and territorial integrity!” he posted on X.
