The following information was received from my sister Sharon from Pennsylvania. Sharon has checked out this neighboring state and discovered some of their ghostly hotspots.
Rockwood Museum
Our first stop is at 4651 Washington St. Ext., Wilmington. At this stop you will find the Rockwood Museum. The Rockwood Museum was once the retirement home of Joseph Shipley. The home was built between 1851 and 1854. Joseph was a successful merchant banker. Joseph designed the home to look like an English country estate. He was successful in doing this. With the home’s gothic look, it actually looks like a haunted home you would have seen in the movies. Remember Stephen King’s Pet Sematery? Well, this home actually has a pet cemetery. One of the ghosts that haunt this museum is Leisure Man. Leisure Man is seen walking around in a red smoking jacket. The ghost of Shipley’s great-niece Mary Bringhurst haunts the home. She was once seen walking inside a wall. When she died, she was 100 years old. She died in 1965. You can tell if Mary is around, you will smell lilacs, this was her favorite perfume. One visitor of this residence claims that he saw Leisure Man standing next to Mary. They looked like they were conversing about something and then disappeared. People have felt cold spots in Mary’s bedroom. The basement is one of the most active places in the house. A ghost called Shadow Man will pop up from out of nowhere. A housekeeper was cleaning up in the basement and Shadowman appeared in front of her, face-to-face. This was too much for the housekeeper and she quit her employment. Orbs of different colors have been seen in the basement. A visitor named Laura Brubaker says she encountered Lucky the ghost dog. Laura called the ghost dog Lucky, because the dog reminded her of her dog Lucky when she was a little girl. Laura said that the ghost dog Lucky actually rolled on his back and seemed to want his belly rubbed and then vanished. On the stairs, people have heard disembodied footsteps. Laura says the ghost that she is not afraid of, is Lucky. She felt that Lucky was there to protect her from the mysterious footsteps that were coming down the stairs.
Cooch’s Bridge: Delaware’s Horrific Battleground
Location: Around the area of S. Old Baltimore Pike. A quick history lesson. On September 3, 1777, 4,000 British and Hessian soldiers marched from Maryland into Delaware. Little did they know an ambush was about to take place. 800 militia and Continental Army soldiers waited in ambush. Their goal was to slow the British advance to Philadelphia and collect vital information. The Americans were victorious. Then the British pushed back, driving their enemy from Aiken Town, now Glasgow, over Iron Hill to the Welsh Baptist Meeting House. There was severe fighting at Cooch’s Bridge, a property along the Christina River named for the Cooch family. Out of ammunition, the Americans retreated, and the British took Philadelphia on September 26, 1777. Many Delawareans who fought at Cooch’s Bridge wintered with Gen. George Washington at Valley Forge. Before the battle, American sentries reported seeing an ominous white spectral horseman. They fired, but the apparition was unharmed. Legend has it that he was a British soldier wearing armor underneath a white sheet. One sensible sergeant aimed high and put a shot in the rider’s head. The apparition was no more. Some say it was a ghost, other’s say it was merely the enemy, a British soldier. When the fog rolls in and there is no moon in the sky, a headless British soldier is said to wander along the road near the haunted battle site, looking for his head. The ghost when he was alive was struck by a cannonball that decapitated him. The cannonball came from friendly fire, because at the time, Americans did not have any cannons. There are other stories, in which some people say it as an American named Charlie Miller. They say Charlie lost his head to a British cannonball. Along the bridge, people have heard the disembodied screams of men, gunshots and cannonball fire is sometimes heard. A self-proclaimed psychic claims that she saw the battle for a good 5 minutes, before everything faded away.
Lum’s Pond State Park: The Screams of a Victim
Lum’s Pond is a popular destination for campers, picnickers, paddlers, bikers and hikers. Delaware Public Archives makes claim that a runaway girl met her end in the 1870s when she encountered a stone-cold killer. Hikers and campers have heard the high-pitched screams and muffled shouts near the Swamp Forest Hiking Trail. They believe that these are the agonizing sounds of a murder victim. Another ghost that is at this location is John Lum, who ran a millhouse along the Chesapeake & Delaware Canal. Visitors have reported seeing the miller and his son roaming the grounds and hearing the phantom sounds of a water wheel. Lisa Marwood who was camping at Lum’s Pond State Park saw the victim ghost girl. She was wearing a blue dress with blood on it. Her eyes were filled with terror as she was seen running out of the tree line. When she disappeared, her screams could be heard. Lisa said the screams at first were loud, then they went into a moderate level and finally she heard some gurgling. Lisa said it sounded like someone was choking, then silence. A small wind went into Lisa’s campsite. Lisa had enough, packed up and left, never to return again. Location: 1068 Howell School Road, Bear, DE
