Daimler Plans to Build Europe’s Largest Truck Charging Network
Daimler Truck has unveiled plans to establish Europe’s largest semi-public charging network for electric trucks, aiming to address the current shortage of suitable charging infrastructure. The European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA) estimates that approximately 35,000 fast-charging points with outputs of 800 kW or more are needed by 2030 to meet the EU’s CO₂ reduction targets; however, fewer than 1,000 such charging points currently exist across Europe.
To bridge this gap, Daimler Truck has developed a concept that allows its TruckCharge customers to share their own charging stations with external users during periods of inactivity. This initiative is designed to expand the charging network for electric trucks. The company plans to launch this semi-public charging network in the third quarter of 2025.
This semi-public network is intended to complement existing public charging infrastructure, such as that operated by Milence—a joint venture founded in July 2022 by Daimler Truck, the TRATON GROUP, and the Volvo Group—which aims to establish and operate 1,700 high-performance public charging points in Europe by 2027.
Martin Hink, Head of eMobility/H2 Business Solutions at Mercedes-Benz Trucks, stated: “With our TruckCharge concept for semi-public charging, we are aiming to close a large gap in the charging infrastructure for trucks. With more than 1,000 dealers in Europe alone, we have the best prerequisites to quickly build up our own network.”
In addition to this initiative, Daimler Truck is bundling e-infrastructure and charging services under the new TruckCharge brand, offering customers comprehensive solutions for depot charging, including consulting, hardware sales, technical service, and financing options.
These efforts underscore Daimler Truck’s commitment to facilitating the transition to climate-neutral road freight transport by enhancing the availability and accessibility of charging infrastructure for electric trucks.
