Chicago Bears could lose top offensive weapon in free agency

NFL: Cincinnati Bengals at Chicago Bears

One of Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams’ top offensive playmakers could be elsewhere in 2025.

Bears wide receiver Keenan Allen is set to become an unrestricted free agent when the new league year begins and free agency gets underway next month, and one insider believes Allen will likely be moving on.

“Allen, who had a salary-cap hit of $23.1 million in 2024,” The Athletic‘s Adam Jahn suggests. “Might be interested in playing with quarterback Caleb Williams again, but Johnson might be more interested in adding speed at receiver,” wrote Jahn. “Allen doesn’t provide that. Plus, the Bears already have Moore, Rome Odunze, and tight end Cole Kmet under contract.”

Where the Bears could go from here at WR if Keenan Allen Moves on

NFL: Carolina Panthers at Chicago Bears
Chicago Bears wide receiver DJ Moore (2) celebrates his receiving touchdown with wide receiver Keenan Allen (13) against the Carolina Panthers during the second quarter at Soldier Field.

During his lone season with the Bears, Allen’s time happened to coincide with Williams going through some major growing pains as a rookie and an offense that was wildly inconsistent amid a change in play-callers. Allen caught just 70 passes for 744 yards and seven touchdowns.

If Chicago is looking to get younger at receiver, the Bears could always target one of the top prospects in this spring’s draft, rather than pay a premium for Allen, ahead of his age-32 season.

But, given that general manager Ryan Poles and the Bears are projected to have upwards of $53.9 million in cap space, money won’t likely be a deciding factor on whether to return to the Bears.

Likewise, Allen may prefer to play for a contender such as the Los Angeles Chargers, division-rival Green Bay Packers or Washington Commanders, who each are a bit closer to competing than the Bears are at the moment.
