Chicago White Sox: considering a key positional change for this promising young player: Report

MLB: Chicago White Sox at Seattle Mariners Oscar Colas

The Chicago White Sox could be one of the more interesting teams to watch this season from the standpoint of the positional battles they’ll have going on.

The White Sox currently have openings at second base, third base, and shortstop, which will be hotly contested this spring with a handful of players competing for those jobs.

One position that the White Sox will look to add depth to is first base, where Andrew Vaughn is the only option on the major league roster.

One option the White Sox have to add more depth at first base is moving a player from a position they’re blocked at and transitioning them over to first. Francys Romero, a Baseball/Sports reporter for the BBWAA, suggested that the White Sox are considering, moving right fielder Oscar Colas over to first base.

“The Chicago White Sox are considering moving Oscar Colas to first base in 2025, per sources.

This could significantly improve his odds of making the Opening Day roster.”

Moving to first base would significantly boost Colas’s chances of making the major league roster, with Colas being a strict right fielder. According to MLB.com Scott Merkin, Colas worked out at first base last spring, so this wouldn’t be his first rodeo at the position.

“Very interesting: Colas worked at first last Spring Training. Colas also was one of the players Will Venable met during his off-season team travel.”

The 26-year-old has the chance to be a decent big-leaguer with only having a handful of opportunities with the White Sox in two years. Colas has played 88 games for the White Sox, and last season, he only appeared in 13 games where he hit .273/.368/.273 for an OPS and OPS+ of .641 and 89.

Most of Colas’s season came at Triple-A, where he played 109 games. In those 109 games, Colas had 21 doubles, 4 triples, 11 HRs, and 51 RBI for a slash line of .246/.332/.400 for an OPS of .732.

Moving to first base could give Colas more opportunities to play and make the White Sox roster as Romero said. Vaughn has not shown worthy of being trusted to be the White Sox first baseman of the future, and this season, he will have to prove that. Having Colas either be a backup or platoon with Vaughn, as well as being able to play the outfield, would give manager Will Venable more options off the bench.

Colas will have to bring it in spring training

Colas will have his work cut out for him this spring while competing for a spot on the White Sox roster.

The White Sox have invited most of their top prospects and a few non-roster invites that could push Colas out of the mix.

Moving over to first could help, but Colas will have to prove it with his bat to push his chances over the top.
