“No downside to a spring training invite;” Chicago Cubs urged to sign former 2016 All-Star pitcher

The Chicago Cubs have acquired a lot of under the radar pitching talent this off-season as they have signed once promising players Brandon Hughes, Trevor Richards, Ben Heller, Phil Bickford, Brooks Kriske, Brad Keller, and reportedly AJ Puckett. There is no risk with these spring training deals and now Jed Hoyer may be urged to sign one more.
A viral video may urge the Chicago Cubs to sign a former 2016 All-Star
On X, a video has gone viral of Noah Syndergaard throwing at a facility in Texas. The 32 year old did not pitch in 2024 and last appeared in the big leagues in 2023 when he split time between the Los Angeles Dodgers and Philadelphia Phillies. Syndergaard hasn’t quite been the same pitcher since undergoing Tommy John surgery in 2020. Before that, he was excellent with the New York Mets and was one of the fastest throwers in the league.

Noah Syndergaard was previously eyeing a return to baseball
During the fall, Jon Heyman reported that Syndergaard was eyeing a return in 2025. Heyman noted that the 6’6″ hurler was down 30 lbs and was training hard. Syndergaard did have a pro day last off-season, in which around 15 teams attended, but he went unsigned.
“No downside to a spring training invite”
Much like the other Cubs signees mentioned earlier, there would be no downside to Chicago signing Syndergaard to a minor league deal with an invite to big league camp. It’s likely that his days as a dominant starting pitcher are over, but perhaps he could thrive out of a bullpen or multi inning role.
The Cubs reportedly are not done yet making moves, so why take a flier on a pitcher like Syndergaard?
