OTL: Pro Bowl “Games” Yawn-Worthy As Usual

Legos OTL

The Baltimore Ravens had a very active presence at the NFL Pro Bowl Games, the game that doesn’t matter before the game we wish they were playing in. The Ravens made their crew personalized Legos to get them ready for all the festivities. We get that you’re still depressed over the outcome in Buffalo but this is childish fun at its best.

The Pro Bowl isn’t exactly the biggest event in the world. It has been re-imagined into more of a fun grouping of football related games before a bit of flag football. With Lamar Jackson turning down his spot, there wasn’t much of a pull to watch if we’re being honest as Ravens fans. Marlon Humphrey showed up anyway.

Humphrey has had some big interceptions on the year. The one in Cincinnati was critically important. The two in Tampa Bay were game-changing plays that turned the game into a Ravens rout. Say what you want about the Pro Bowl, his performance remains consistent, as he intercepted Sam Darnold.

Sticking with the Ravens cornerback for a second we have this take on the Super Bowl matchup:

The Ravens started the season with the Kansas City Chiefs and almost walked away with an impressive upset. I think Humphrey is correct, at least from the perspective of a Ravens player. When the Eagles came into Baltimore, they imposed their will. It was a competitive game until it wasn’t. The fact of the matter is that when the Ravens took on the Chiefs they figured things out and gave them a run for their money, but the Eagles made the Ravens buckle after a scoreless third quarter. Kansas City made Baltimore crave a rematch while the Eagles made the team do some soul searching. If the Super Bowl comes down to what team is the best it should be the Eagles. I agree with Humphrey, they were the best team on the Ravens schedule.

As we get into some actual news about the Ravens football operations, we turn to this report by Ian Rappoport. The NFL Network reporter states that the Ravens have hired Tyler Santucci to be their new linebackers coach. Santucci was the defensive coordinator of the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. While, I’ll admit that I don’t know much about the hire, bringing in anyone on the defensive side is interesting. The Ravens had a weird year when it comes to defense. They started out horribly, things got worse, then things got pretty darn good. Zach Orr’s first year at defensive coordinator was guided by the addition of Dean Pees as a senior advisor. The Ravens finished the postseason seeing their number one run defense being picked on by the Buffalo Bills’ run game. I’m not saying Zach Orr has to worry but the Ravens are adding defensive coordinator-level talent to their coaching staff in support of him, but if he falters, there will be others on staff to elevate.

Taking off the conspiracy hat may be a good idea. Sarah Ellison posted on X that the Ravens defensive coaching staff got absolutely gutted after last season and not enough people talked about it (though we did!).

The Ravens Brain Drain is Real

She’s got a point; a lot of coaching talent went elsewhere. The Ravens coaches got poached and they still looked within the organization to replace Mike Macdonald, no easy task. The Ravens surely needed to restock the brain trust on the defensive side of things. They’ve shown great loyalty to Orr so this could be seen as a support system for him to continue to get better. There is a lot of experience around him now.

As the Ravens head into the offseason, you will see more and more takes that Mark Andrews should be traded for the salary cap benefit. After the Bills game, this take is going to be even more prevalent. I think it’s something that we wouldn’t see so many people entertaining without consulting their recency bias.

The question I have is how much do the Ravens bank on Isaiah Likely stepping up to become an elite tight end? Likely has had solid seasons and certainly can be a starter in the NFL. He’s a play-maker but Andrews has been an elite tight end. We’re trying not to be mad at him right now because he is the franchise leader in touchdown receptions. Andrews had 11 touchdowns this season coming back from a painful and inhibiting 2023 injury and a car accident during training camp. Likely hasn’t shown that he can be the main guy, or at least he’s not the proven commodity that Andrews is. Likely is coming off his best season with 42 receptions and six touchdowns. I like Likely as much as the next guy, but Andrews has been playing at a level above almost every tight end in the NFL. For now, it’s just a lot of talk.

If you were holding your breath on that Pro Bowl result… the NFC won again.
