Chicago Bears insider reveals his top 2025 NFL draft needs, with some interesting surprises

Chicago Bears

With the 2025 NFL Draft about a week away, the discussion topics are heating up around the league. Who will go in the top 5? Which team will reach for a player of need, and what team will grab the draft’s biggest steal? Will anyone trade back, or trade up? The storylines are certainly there.

Now, we shift focus to the Chicago Bears and their potential plan of attack when they select 10th overall next Thursday. The number of possibilities involving this selection is quite high, as the organization has had its eyes on plenty of intriguing prospects as the draft inches closer, ranging from EDGE rushers to running backs, and even an offensive tackle.

The needs are obvious, but if the draft went as planned every year, we’d be having a different discussion. The unpredictability of draft day is what makes the weekend so special and fun to follow, and the Bears are no exception to becoming erratic.

What are the biggest needs for the Chicago Bears as they enter the 2025 NFL Draft?

When discussing what a team “needs” on their roster, the conversation can be all over the place. For example, even though the Chicago Bears signed RB DeAndre Swift to a three-year 24 million dollar contract last year, many think regardless of how bad the offensive line was, the team needs to target another back in the draft.

Especially considering where their new head coach Ben Johnson came from as the Lions’ offensive coordinator, Detroit moved on from Swift and replaced him with Pro-Bowl speedster Jahmyr Gibbs. That could be a route that the Bears decide to go after meeting with several backs.

Today, Bears insider Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune revealed what his top 2025 NFL Draft needs are during his weekly mailbag, where fans ask him questions. He even mentioned a few positions that might come as a surprise to some fans.

If you’re strictly looking at the current depth chart and the needs for 2025, I’d say left tackle, edge rusher, and running back, with safety also in the mix. Defensive tackle, tight end, linebacker, and guard loom as wants, and you never should discount the possibility of adding a cornerback. If there’s a wide receiver Ben Johnson views as an ideal fit for his scheme — perhaps one with top-end speed — that would also make a lot of sense.

Most fans will agree with that statement. It’s not just a few needs, it’s plenty, and it could easily turn into a ‘best available’ situation. The flashy picks would be Ashton Jeanty, the elite back from Boise State, or the best tight end in the draft, Tyler Warren from Penn State. Either would immediately help the team on offense and provide a major spark.

The surprising one here for me was wide receiver. Biggs does make a good point, if Johnson sees a great scheme fit with some top-end speed, he could pull the trigger.

Safety is another intriguing position that some think the Bears don’t necessarily need at the moment, but could down the road. This draft will be won in the second and third days, as many usually are, so GM Ryan Poles will need to be on his A-game during this very deep draft.

Will the Chicago Bears draft strategy change under new head coach Ben Johnson?

The Bears finally moved on from Matt Eberlfus last year, and then made a huge splash by hiring the top head coach candidate this offseason, Ben Johnson. Johnson brings a high-powered offense and a brand-new thought process to the organization, something they desperately needed.

Will that new mentality also change the way the Bears draft? Biggs mentioned that he doesn’t believe so and that too much attention is being brought to the topic.

I think too much attention has been paid to what the Lions did in the draft the last several years. Did Ben Johnson have input into what they did? Sure. Coordinators are involved in the predraft process, but it’s a minor role in the grand scheme.

I’d agree with that sentiment as well. Johnson will bring new ideas and flashy plays to an offense that was begging for it, but his say on the roster makeup might be less than fans think.

When the 2025 NFL Draft begins next Thursday, all of our questions will be answered.
