Notes: Ho-Hum Home Stand; Renegade, Jared & Henry Up, Tim, Tsung-Che & Endy Out, Holderman Rehab, Mayza IL & Horwitz To FL; MLB Moves
Long season already…
Pirates Stuff:
- C Endy Rodriguez was placed on the 10-day IL after needing stiches in his hand; RHP Chase Shugart was recalled after being optioned three days before. C Joey Bart, who the Pirates were carrying on the active roster though he had a sore back, got back in the saddle. Just in case, Indy C Abrahan Gutierrez was added to the taxi squad for a second before being replaced by newly-acquired Brett Sullivan.
- David Bednar is back after five outings at Indy (no runs, one hit). LHP Tim Mayza (left lat sprain) was placed on the 15-day IL.
- Utility guy Jared Triolo was sent to Indy on Tuesday to begin a rehab stint. He homered and on Wednesday was back with the Bucs. IF Tsung-Che Cheng was optioned to AAA.
- 1B Enmanuel Valdez banged up his shoulder sliding into third Saturday and was removed from the game, but it didn’t cost him any time off. He appeared the next day, pinch-hitting and then staying in the game to play first.

- RHP Colin Holderman began his rehab stint (knee) at Indy on Saturday.
- 1B Spencer Horwitz was sent to the Bucs Florida Complex to get some live-action work; the next step is a rehab stint at Indy. There is no timeline for either phase.
- In a minor league deal, the Padres traded C/OF/3B Brett Sullivan to the Pirates for OF Bryce Johnson. Sullivan, 31, got into 40 games over the past two years for the Friars, batting .206 primarily as a C. Johnson, 29, played some for San Diego last year (he hit .177 in three MLB campaigns) and was at Indy after signing with Pittsburgh as a FA in January.
- LHP Andrew Heaney reached 10 years of MLB service time on Thursday and celebrated by claiming the dub in a 1-0 win over Washington.
- Oneil Cruz became the first Bucco to bang lead-off bombs in back-to-back games since Cutch did it last year on 4/22-23 v the Brew Crew at PNC Park.
- Endy Rodriguez had to leave Monday’s game when Paul Skene’s pitch took a hop and caught his finger; Henry Davis replaced him (Skenes & Davis became the first MLB battery consisting of Number One overall draft picks while mound foes Paul and Nats pitcher Dylan Crews were teammates at LSU, College World Series winners and the 1-2 picks in the ’23 draft.) Endy got some stitches and an IL posting. (Yo-yo pitcher Chase Shugart was recalled) But the Bucs wrung some good juju from Cutch’s pre-game handouts of Black & Gold rally necklaces as the Pirates broke out with a 10-3 win. All nine starters had raps (five had multi-hit nights) and all but one drove in and/or scored runs; their 14 hits were the early-season high. Unlikely clean-up hitter Enmanuel Valdez and Ke’Bryan Hayes led the attack with three RBIs apiece.
- Then back to normal; they went down the next night, 3-0, posting four hits before fewer than 9,000 fans. Mitch Keller took the loss.
- Pittsburgh took the third match with a 6-1 win. Bailey Falter went seven scoreless frames, facing the minimum 21 batters despite two hits and a walk. Oneil Cruz hit a grand slam, his first MLB grannie, on the first pitch following a bit of basebrawl after Jorge Lopez hit Bryan Reynold and headhunted Cutch back-to-back. He was ejected and suspended for three games the following day (he’s appealing). Henry Davis added his first dinger of the year and posted two RBI as the Bucs won, 6-1.

- The Pirates took the series the next afternoon when Andrew Heaney tossed shutout ball into the eighth to make Cruz’s leadoff homer hold up, 1-0. The effort was on-time; Pittsburgh only posted five hits during the day.
- Skenes got his ROY award before the Cleveland game with the only previous Bucco awardee, Jason Bay, on hand. And hey, Cruz led off for the Bucs with another dinger, just like yesterday. But Carmen Mlodzinski’s starter’s auditions that last just one-time around seem to validate that he’s a reliever, He left with no outs in the fifth with five runs rung up, then Kyle Nicolas was shelled (1/3 IP – 5 runs). The maligned attack tried to claw back – Bryan Reynolds and Enmanuel Valdez added homers – but fell to the Guardians, 10-7. It was a beautiful day and 27,000 showed up for the ceremony and post-game fireworks.
- Paul drew folks into PNC for his bobblehead day Saturday. So many people were lined up for one that Bob Nutting said hold on to your tickets; if they ran out before you got to the gate, they’ll send you a voucher for one.. Oh, ‘Stache was pitching, too. He left after seven frames, down 2-0; the Bucs had six hits and went 0-for-8 with RISP in a 3-0 loss. There were, btw, 37,713 fans present at the ballyard.
- The Bucs score three times in the ninth, with the key blow being Adam Frazier’s two-run double, but still were swept when a 10th-inning sac fly gave the Guardians a 5-4 win. The Bucs had two on with no outs in the extra frame, but Cruz banged into a DP and Valdez’s fly ball ended the threat. Pittsburgh was 2-for-11 with RISP. They have Monday off, then visit the Angels.
- Last year’s Bucco closer Aroldis Chapman smoked a 102.3 MPH on the hill Saturday, the fastest pitch ever thrown by a Red Sox player during the StatCast era. And wait ’til he loosens up – last August, StatCast clocked him in at 105 MPH as a Pirates

- RHP Tyler Beede, 32, has signed a minor league deal with the Twins, He pitched here in 2022 (2-5/5.23) and also worked for San Fran, Cleveland and in Japan.
- The Chicago White Sox signed RHP Keone Kela (Pirates line: 2018-20, 2-1-1/2.49) and assigned him to the Arizona Complex rookie squad to get in shape. KK’s pitched in the minors, Japan and Mexico since 2021 TJ surgery.
- The Colorado Rockies fired their hitting coach and replaced him with former Bucco skipper Clint Hurdle for the remainder of the season.
