Chicago Cubs add to historic walk-off rate in MLB history in 2025

For as many games as their bullpen has blown this year, the Chicago Cubs have fought back in contests that they had no business winning to begin with. Relief pitching has been a major issue for the franchise over the past two seasons, and 2025 hasn’t seen much positive change in that department of their group. The circle of trust for Cub relievers changes on a daily basis, and it is already a forgone conclusion that at least two new arms will join the stable at the trade deadline.
The one difference between this year’s team compared to the previous few years is the fight that they show. They have come from behind on multiple occasions, and have played the part of the “Cardiac Cubs” well to begin the season. While the bullpen and pitching staff as a whole can’t always bank on the offense to bail them out late in games, it’s good to know that this team can battle adversity and win the close games late. Playoff teams know how to come from behind and how to close games out, which is what this group has done well for the most part through their first 43 games of the campaign.
Justin Turner’s walk-off two-run double on Tuesday against the Marlins had the Wrigley Field crowd rocking once again, and it was just one of a handful of walk-off hits across baseball on Tuesday night.
The Chicago Cubs contributed to one of five walk offs on Tuesday
Tucker’s walk-off double was one of five walk-off knocks in the league on Tuesday. Per Jesse Rogers and @ESPNStatsInfo on X, There were 5 walk-off wins on Tuesday which is tied for the most on a single day this season. For the year so far, there have been 62 walk-offs, the most through May 13 since 2011.
Two other notable walk-offs on Tuesday came from former Cubs that now play in the American League. Javier Baez blasted a three-run homer that led to the Tigers beating the Red Sox, 10-9 in 11 innings. It was the second home run of the game for Baez, who is enjoying a career-changing year as the center fielder in Detroit.
After spending less than half a season in his second stint in the Cubs organization, Isaac Paredes is doing well in Houston. Just like Baez, he launched a walk-off homer in the Astros’ 2-1 victory over the Royals. Paredes was one of the three players dealt in the Kyle Tucker trade, which both franchises seem to be benefitting from right now.
Justin Turner needed a big knock in a Chicago Cubs uniform
Turner has struggled mightily so far in his time with the Cubs. The 40-year-old is hitting just .169 in 59 at-bats after signing a one-year deal with the organization this past offseason. Turner has now driven in nine runs in 2025, and has been a stable veteran presence for the young guys in the clubhouse. He is a true professional hitter and will settle into whatever role that manager Craig Counsell has in mind for him as summer nears, as it is still too early to pull the plug on him being with the team for a potential playoff push.
