Chicago Cubs have very bad news on pitcher’s injury before Marlins’ game

Chicago Cubs manager Craig Counsell (11) watches players warm up during spring training camp.

The Chicago Cubs were expected to announce a few roster moves after left fielder Ian Happ confirmed on Tuesday on 670 The Score Tuesday that he was being placed on the 10-day injured list for an oblique injury he sustained on Friday against the New York Mets at Citi Field.

The Cubs hoped Happ would only miss a day or so of games this weekend. He hasn’t played since Friday. Chicago is playing it safe with Happ, backdating his designation so he can return before the Cubs play the Miami Marlins on May 20.

With Happ on the IL, the Cubs were expected to call up catcher Moises Ballesteros to make his debut in the majors on Tuesday night against the Marlins. Ballesteros is batting .368/.420/.522  in Triple-A with a .942 OPS in 34 games.

Per Maddie Lee with the Chicago Sun-Times, the Cubs made the transaction official on Tuesday afternoon in a move that proved to have bad news on relief pitcher Tyson Miller. Miller has been transferred from the 15-day injured list to the 60-day injured list.

“Cubs make it official: They’ve selected Moises Ballesteros from Triple-A, put Ian Happ (left oblique strain) on the 10-day IL, retro to May 10. Tyson Miller transferred from 15-day IL to the 60-day,” Lee posted on X.

Miller is dealing with a hip impingement while he rehabs in Iowa. The issue appears to have worsened for the right-handed pitcher. With a pitching staff that has suffered several key injuries already this season, Miller’s progress is not what the Cubs hoped.
