In Defense of Kimberly Ellis: A Community’s Call for Truth and Transparency

SF BayView Staff ([email protected]) – The halls of San Francisco’s City Hall were filled with voices of support as community members, activists, and leaders came forward to speak on behalf of Kimberly Ellis, the embattled Director of the Department on the Status of Women. Amidst allegations of financial mismanagement and a so-called “culture of fear,” her supporters argue that the narrative being pushed is not just misleading but a deliberate attempt to undermine a Black woman in leadership who dared to challenge the status quo.

A Question of Integrity and Misinformation

Karen Fleshman, of the Interracial Sisterhood Coalition, raised serious concerns about the integrity of the information circulating in the media. According to Fleshman, Ellis is not on paid administrative leave, as initially reported, but on medical leave. More troubling, she alleged that the Mayor’s Office was aware of Ellis’s status yet still allowed misleading narratives to take hold in outlets such as the San Francisco Chronicle and the San Francisco Standard.

“We want to know what happened at the Foster Care Pilot Program and how long the Mayor, the Department of Human Resources, and the City Attorney’s Office knew about it,” Fleshman stated, pointing to a possible cover-up related to the program’s mismanagement.

Demanding the Full Truth

Rebecca Jackson, Vice President of Reentry and Public Affairs for Community Fordward SF and Co-Chair of the San Francisco Women’s Housing Coalition, echoed the need for transparency. “I think we deserve to hear the whole truth and nothing but the truth so we can come to our own conclusions,” she said, questioning the timing and motives behind the accusations.

In her experience working with Ellis, Jackson described a leader who was transparent and collaborative. “Even when we didn’t agree, there was always open dialogue,” she said. “So why now? If there were concerns about HR or events, why weren’t they raised before?”

Jackson also pointed to a larger climate of fear facing women in leadership, particularly Black women. “At this time, it doesn’t feel safe to be a woman in this country, and it doesn’t feel safe to be one in this city.”

The Role of Racial and Political Bias

Dr. Ren Akasha Il, representing People for the Ethical Treatment of African Americans and Black Women Organized for Political Action, emphasized that the treatment of Ellis reflects a broader pattern of racial and gender-based targeting. “It is very important that the transparency needed here actually comes forth,” she said, calling for integrity in both reporting and governance.

The Black Employees Alliance has also highlighted racial bias in the way Ellis is being scrutinized compared to other city officials. Many of her supporters believe that Ellis is being unfairly targeted for challenging entrenched systems of power, particularly in addressing misconduct within city programs.

A Call to Action

Ellis’s supporters are not just defending her—they are demanding a full and fair investigation, one that includes accountability for those who may have orchestrated a smear campaign against her. “We trust that you, wonderful, beautiful women, will make sure that happens,” Dr. Il urged the commission.

For now, the fight continues. But one thing is clear: Kimberly Ellis is not standing alone. The community has spoken, and they demand justice—not just for Ellis, but for every woman who dares to lead.
