US Interest In Greenland, Not A Trump Misdirection
The U.S. has been interested in Greenland for over 150 years, since 1867, driven by its strategic North Atlantic location, rich natural resources (like rare earth minerals and oil). Initially sparked by Secretary of State William Seward’s curiosity, serious engagement began in the 1940s during World War II, when the U.S. established bases to protect it after Denmark’s fall to Germany. This interest intensified during the Cold War, with a 1946 purchase offer (rejected by Denmark) and the 1951 Defense Agreement solidifying military presence, including Thule Air Base. Today, the U.S. values Greenland to counter Russia and China in the Arctic, a focus renewed in 2019 when Trump suggested buying it. As of April 2, 2025, this strategic partnership continues, blending military, economic, and geopolitical goals.
