More than the aroma of roasted coffee wafting from the top floor, there’s another hint from the outside of 1401 Legendre St. W. that something a little different is happening inside. A bright mural triptych spans the modest low-rise building’s façade, showcasing its textile factory roots, its current incarnation as an urban farm, and a portrayal of what a greener future might look like.
Six years ago, an energetic cohort of environmentally focused entrepreneurs created Centrale Agricole, a large urban agriculture co-operative near Marché Central. From the basement to the rooftop, the non-profit co-op’s 19 members are now growing hydroponic greens, raising Arctic char, producing all manner of mushrooms, making wine, piquette and cider, roasting coffee, and fashioning popsicles and smoothie mixes from repurposed fruit.
That’s in addition to cultivating heritage seed, creating building materials out of mushroom detritus, and collecting and distributing food baskets from produce that would otherwise be directed to landfill.
Occupying more than half of the 120,000 square feet of the building, the Centrale Agricole’s co-op members are dedicated to creating alternative food systems with environmental, economic and social benefits.
