Pennsylvania Special State Election a Shocker as GOP Seat turns Blue
It looks like an upset is on its way for rural Lancaster County in Pennsylvania. Trump had taken the district by 15 percent in November. There were two special state elections that took place yesterday. The House seat remains Democrat which was no surprise but insures that they will have the majority. But a major upset for the Senate District and let us hope this does not portend for 2026.
With nearly all votes counted in Lancaster County’s 36th Senate District special election, Democrat James Malone had a narrow lead over Republican Josh Parsons as of 10:30 p.m. Tuesday evening.
The county’s elections website showed 100% of precincts reporting, with Malone getting 26,951 votes compared to Parsons’ 26,469. Libertarian candidate Zachary Moore had obtained 480.
County elections clerk Christa Miller said she did not know how many provisional ballots still need to be counted, though she confirmed that there are some. Also, she said, overseas ballots could still arrive before the 5 p.m. cutoff on April 1.
The Senate Democratic Campaign Committee and party leaders like Gov. Josh Shapiro declared victory for Malone Tuesday night.
Malone had not been expected to win the conservative 36th Senate District. The district, which includes small towns, farmland, and burgeoning exurbs, backed President Donald Trump by 15 percentage points in November.
It has not elected a Democrat since being moved from south-central Pennsylvania via redistricting in the 1980s, though state Democrats have increasingly won voters in the region since the first Trump administration.
The seat was open after state Sen. Ryan Aument resigned in December to take a job with U.S. Sen. Dave McCormick (R., Pa.). The win does not affect control of the state Senate, and means Republicans’ edge in the upper chamber is now 27-23.
Stephen Medvic, a political science professor at Franklin & Marshall College, posted on social media Tuesday night: “Democrats just flipped a seat in a Trump +15 state senate district in Lancaster County, PA. Margin was less than 500 votes, and there will likely be challenges, but this is stunning.”
Meanwhile out Pittsburgh Way-
The state House district that was up for election includes some small milltowns along the Monongahela River south of Pittsburgh, and has been represented by Democrats for the past 60 years.
That win affirms the party will retain its majority in the lower chamber, at least until the next Democratic vacancy. Back at full power, Democrats lead the chamber by a margin of just 102 to 101.
With control of the agenda again secure, Democrats now have additional leverage in upcoming budget talks, as well as the power to decide what bills get a vote and which languish on the table.
