This corner of the large reptile tree (LRT, 2338 taxa) is where many of the mammalian oddballs and former enigma taxa nest together as sort of an island of misfits.

All but their progenitor,
the basal placental1 taxon, Nasua (Fig 1) are now extinct. Some are Late Cretaceous in strata, pointing to an earlier radiation for more primitive taxa.
