The Chicago Cubs have had a series of unfortunate injury news pop up during their West Coast trip.

The Cubs learned they lost starting pitcher Justin Steele for the remainder of the season as he has to undergo Tommy John surgery to repair his left elbow. He had Tommy John surgery previously in 2017.

Chicago designated hitter Seiya Suzuki (wrist) and catcher Carson Kelly (hand) suffered injuries in their series against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Cubs manager Craig Counsell hopes they can return to the lineup by Friday’s matchup at home against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

On Monday night, right-handed reliever Eli Morgan had to exit the Cubs’ 10-4 loss to the San Diego Padres due to an elbow injury after .2 innings pitched. He gave up three hits, two home runs, and four earned runs before leaving.

Per Maddie Lee of the Chicago Sun-Times, the Cubs placed Morgan on the 15-day injured list for the issue. Chicago will know more about Morgan’s timeline to return when he has imaging.

Via Lee on X:

“Craig Counsell said Eli Morgan’s elbow injury didn’t crop up until yesterday, during his second inning of work. Has yet to undergo imaging. ‘We’ll see how he feels as we get back to Chicago, and then figure out what’s next for him.’”

Morgan has appeared in seven games this season. He has a 12.27 ERA in 7.1 innings pitched this season. He’s given up 12 hits, 10 earned runs, three walks, and has four strikeouts.
