Which Terps Could be Ravens? A Report from Maryland’s Pro Day

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

The Ravens don’t have an especially strong history when it comes drafting players out of the University of Maryland, the team’s biggest local college program.

Several Terrapins have signed in Baltimore as undrafted free agents, including safety Beau Brade, who made the 53-man roster last season. However, the last one to be drafted by the Ravens was Torrey Smith in 2011.

That could change in April. Maryland’s Pro Day on March 28 featured a few players who could factor into the Ravens’ plans for their 11 selections.

In recent years, Eric DeCosta has used premium draft capital on young, athletic prospects who declared for the draft early, including Nate Wiggins, Odafe Oweh, and Patrick Queen. Terps Defensive tackle Jordan Phillips could fit that mold this year. He won’t turn 21 until June 30, and his tape shows an impressive athlete who could grow into a game-wrecker in the NFL.

Phillips has the requisite confidence to be a 20-year-old defensive lineman entering the draft with zero college sacks to his name. He was self-assured in his interactions with media and scouts, and despite a somewhat underwhelming performance at the Combine, he didn’t participate in any athletic testing.

Improved numbers could have boosted Phillips’ stock, making his decision not to test an interesting one. Usually, players declare early because they’re already projected to go so high that they have little to gain by coming back for another year. That’s not the case for Phillips, who is currently projected to go in the third round. Stronger athletic testing would help show teams how much untapped potential he has in his 6-foot-1, 312-pound frame.

Maryland head coach Mike Locksley raved about Phillips’ work ethic and approach, calling his preparation “almost OCD-like.” That was evident in Phillips’ interview, when he rattled off a long list of NFL defensive linemen that he studies, including Jordan Davis, Jalen Carter, and Kobie Turner.

Phillips’ youth and raw physical tools will be intriguing for a Ravens defensive line that needs to get younger and more athletic along the interior. The team may want a more polished pass-rusher from a strong class at the position, but their cache of 11 picks would allow them to double-dip with Phillips and a more experienced player.

Wideouts Tai Felton and Kaden Prather could be candidates to round out the Ravens’ receiver room. Baltimore did add DeAndre Hopkins and re-sign Tylan Wallace this offseason, but the team has included six wide receivers on their initial 53-man roster both seasons under offensive coordinator Todd Monken. Still, a rookie WR will likely be blocked on the offensive depth chart and would need to find a way to contribute on special teams.

Felton had one of the best seasons by any college receiver in 2024 and by any Maryland receiver ever with 96 receptions, 1,124 receiving yards, and nine touchdowns. His game film and performance at the Combine both show an uber-athletic receiver who can make defenders miss and threaten teams downfield with his straight line speed and deep ball tracking. He did not test at his Pro Day.

Felton will need to learn how to win with more than just athleticism on a consistent basis in the NFL and improve his ability to play through contact. He could factor in as a returner in the NFL, something he displayed at his Pro Day, but his size may limit him in other special teams roles and as a blocker on offense. The Ravens haven’t shied away from smaller wide receivers in DeCosta’s tenure, and the coaching staff will appreciate Felton’s football I.Q. and tenacity. He could be a Day 3 target, but other teams may value his potential to contribute right away as a slot receiver higher than Baltimore does.

Prather also stood on his Combine numbers, which reflect his solid long speed but below-average explosion. His frame has clear potential as a red zone target, blocker, and special teams contributor, but he lacks elite traits to set him apart from the rest of the class. His route-running technique is solid, but limited by his average athleticism.

Prather seemed somewhat underused at Maryland, and that wouldn’t get any better with the Ravens. He is likely a late Day 3 option who would need to carve out a special teams role to win the WR6 roster spot.

Maryland’s last prospect who is expected to be drafted is safety Dante Trader Jr. The Ravens should be looking hard at this safety class, but Trader doesn’t quite fit what the Ravens need in this draft. He profiles more as a hybrid defensive back who can play as big nickel, dimebacker, or single-high safety. Baltimore needs a more coverage-oriented split-field safety, similar to Geno Stone in 2023 (or what Marcus Williams and Eddie Jackson were supposed to be in 2024). The Ravens already have safeties who can run the alley, play roles in nickel and dime defenses, and contribute on special teams.

Trader did not have a strong Combine, but his overall RAS underrates the athleticism that was evident in his multi-sport (football and lacrosse) career at Maryland. His instincts and anticipation show up best as a run defender, but he will struggle against the NFL’s athletic tight ends and slot receivers. If the Ravens were to take one safety with a premium pick, Trader could be an option for a Day 3 double-dip at the position.
