Spring Cleaning for Survival: Organize Your Preps Before the Heat Hits | Episode 400 Time to Clean, Check, and Rotate

It’s easy to forget about that bucket of rice in the back of your closet or the first aid kit you packed three years ago. But if you wait until a disaster hits to find out your gear is expired, broken, or missing—you’ve already lost.

In Episode 400, we’re getting into the nitty-gritty of spring cleaning your preps. This isn’t about dusting shelves. This is about auditing your readiness, fixing weak points, and making space for what actually works.

Step 1: Check Your Dates

Go through all your food storage. Check expiration dates on:

  • Canned goods
  • Freeze-dried meals
  • MREs
  • Medicine and vitamins
  • Batteries (yes, they expire too!)

If something’s close to expiring, rotate it out and use it now. Replace it with fresh stock. And take notes on what you actually use—so you’re not storing food you’ll never eat.

Step 2: Test and Recharge

Spring is the perfect time to test all your gear:

  • Flashlights: do they work? Any corrosion?
  • Radios: check range, batteries, antenna condition
  • Power banks: recharge and test capacity
  • Water filters: inspect for clogs or damage
  • Propane or butane stoves: run a test fire and check seals

You don’t want to be learning that your solar charger is dead during a blackout.

Step 3: Declutter and Prioritize

Do a brutal gear check. Ask yourself:

  • Have I used this in the past year?
  • Is it redundant or outdated?
  • Would I pack this in a bug-out bag today?

If it’s junk, damaged, or a gimmick you never trusted—get rid of it. Sell it, donate it, or scrap it. Make space for quality gear and backups that you actually trust.

Step 4: Reorganize Your Storage

After rotation and purging, now’s the time to reorganize for speed and accessibility:

  • Group like items (first aid, food, tools, water)
  • Label containers clearly
  • Store heavy items low, light items high
  • Keep your go-bag and get-home bag front and center

Good organization means you’re not digging through chaos when every second counts.

Step 5: Update Your Inventory List

If you’re not tracking what you have, you’ll waste money and time. Update your digital or paper list with:

  • What’s in stock
  • Quantities
  • Expiration dates
  • Items to replace

This also helps in budgeting and planning future purchases.

Final Thoughts

Prepping isn’t set-it-and-forget-it. It’s a living system—and like any system, it needs maintenance.

Spring is the perfect time to tune up your preps, clean out the clutter, and refresh your readiness. Because when it gets hot—and the power grid strains or the storms hit—you want to know you’re solid.

So pour a coffee, throw on some gloves, and get to work.

Survival starts with systems that work—and that starts with spring cleaning.
