The Trump administration has taken control of the $7 billion Penn Station reconstruction project in New York City, sidelining the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA).
The Department of Transportation (.gov) (DOT), under Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, announced that the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) will lead the project in collaboration with Amtrak. The DOT cited the need for greater efficiency and cost savings, arguing that Amtrak, as the owner of Penn Station, is best positioned to lead the reconstruction. The administration plans to pursue a public-private partnership model for the project.
While the MTA is no longer the lead agency, they expect to remain involved in future phases as the major leaseholder in the station. The administration claims this new approach will save taxpayers around $120 million by streamlining the project and leveraging private investment. The aim is to transform the aging and congested Penn Station into a safer, more efficient, and world-class transit hub.
