Shocking new detail in relationship between former Chicago Bears coach and Caleb Williams

Chicago Bears

The Shane Waldron era as the Chicago Bears offensive coordinator was not a long one in the 2024 season. He was brought in under third year head coach Matt Eberflus after spending time as the Seahawks offensive coordinator. Waldron was relieved of his duties as the team’s offensive play caller after a rough nine games to begin the campaign.

The 45-year-old originates from the Sean McVay coaching tree and has already landed back on his feet for the upcoming season. Waldron will serve as the passing game coordinator for first-year head coach Liam Coen down in Jacksonville.

Waldron’s relationship with rookie sensation Caleb Williams was never characterized as excellent by those in Halas Hall. The two had a hard time staying on the same page and that showed through the lack of fluidness the offense displayed through Waldron’s short tenure in the Windy City. Another detail of the partnership between Waldron and Williams was revealed, and it’s not a good one.

A new detail revealed on Caleb Williams’ relationship with Shane Waldron

It was apparent that when Thomas Brown took over the offense after Waldron was let go by the Bears, that his one-on-one time with Williams was the most he had with a coach in the NFL. The Making Monsters podcast by 2nd City Gridiron with Taylor Doll revealed another ripple in the relationship between Waldron and Williams.

“He built his own film study room because Shane Waldron was not going over film with him,” Doll said.

Williams taking this initiative to go out of his way to study more film on his own is a great sign for the type of player that he is going to be for the Bears organization. However, the hiring of Waldron becomes even more questioning if this is truly the case in him not wanting to study film with his young franchise quarterback.

The number one overall pick was still able to accomplish some solid feats despite being dealt a tough hand with his first coaching staff in the league. Williams was the first rookie quarterback in franchise history to throw for over 3,000 yards in a season and had a chance to break the record for most passing yards in a season by any Bears quarterback ever if it wasn’t for the Seattle game.

Caleb Williams is better off moving forward for the Chicago Bears

The Ben Johnson hire is one that could take Williams to the next level as he prepares for his second season in the league. Detroit’s offensive mastermind over the past few seasons has already said that he will rip down the playbook and build it up around the former USC Trojan.

It’s been a long time since an offensive minded coach in Chicago has been willing to build around the personnel as opposed to make them fit into their system, which is a positive step in the right direction. Another receiver will be added for Williams this offseason in the place of Keenan Allen. Johnson likes to rely on speed and a third wideout that is a pure burner should certainly be on the to-do list for the front office to add this offseason.

Along with a new target, Williams will have better protection in his second season. Chicago needs to bring in three offensive lineman through the draft and free agency, with this being a great offseason to do so. If he has more time to operate in the pocket in a new scheme, the sky could be the limit for Williams moving forward.
